Student Support Services Policies

Elangeni TVET College aims to identify, diagnose and target low performing subjects/students that might hinder students’ success and devise appropriate interventions.

  • Provide guidance to the College on how to respond to the effects of unpreparedness of new students enrolling into the College;
  • To provide guidance to the college on the importance of student profiling so as to generate data that directs relevant academic support to where it is required;
  • Provide guidance to the college to develop their own effective academic support programmes and interventions for underperforming students and high achievers who require special academic support interventions that stretch them beyond the current curriculum knowledge; and
  • Enable the college to move from providing decontextualized and generalized academic support interventions to data driven targeted interventions to enhance student engagement, retention and success.

guides students about the expected conduct while studying in the college. Elangeni TVET College requires all students to act as responsible citizens and members of a higher education academic community. Each student is responsible to know, observe, abide by, and adhere to the College’s Student Code of Conduct, policies, rules, and regulations. Students must comply with all policies applicable to conduct in the classroom as well as College-sponsored activities.

The College will make this Code of Conduct, as well as its other policies and procedures, available to its students.  Upon enrolling in the College, students are automatically placed under the guidelines, rules and regulations established by the College.  Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with all policies and procedures affecting them.

Elangeni TVET college recognizes the positive correlation between class attendance and both student retention and achievement. Any class session or activity missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity for learning and may adversely affect a student’s achievement in the course.

Levels of attendance have a direct impact on the success of our students. Students are more likely to complete and achieve their qualification if they attend classes regularly. Students who arrive late have an impact not just on their own learning but also on the progress of the rest of the class. Similarly, employers set high expectations of attendance and punctuality in the workplace.

The college therefore expects campuses to set and enforce, and our students to comply with high levels of attendance and punctuality to improve students’ chances for success and prepare them for the professional culture of the workplace

The overall health and wellbeing of Elangeni TVET College students are of paramount importance to the functioning of Elangeni TVET College as a public institution. Elangeni TVET College is fully committed to its obligation to its and students and recognizes the importance of student wellness by establishing a framework in order to promote wellness for the benefit of students

Education White paper 6 (2001) calls for an education system that provides inclusion broadly and eliminates discrimination and disadvantage in the area of education.  Inclusive education is aimed at providing   a fair education opportunity for disadvantaged groups such as children and youth from poor backgrounds, the disabled, homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, orphaned and vulnerable children and adults who have missed out on educational opportunities for various reasons.

Further, inclusive education requires continued teacher professional development in the area of inclusivity in the classroom. This involves an ability of teachers to be able to identify and address barriers to learning through differentiating the curriculum, assessment and classroom methodologies so as to address diverse learning and teaching requirements of all learners in the classroom.  In light of this, the Elangeni College for TVET College aims to engage students, including those with disabilities so that they achieve at the highest possible level of learning and wellbeing through quality teaching and learning. The college accepts students with disability and commits to providing support in order to gain access and take part in their chosen programmes.  This is in line with the Government Gazette No. 36041 which stipulates that learners with barriers to learning and assessment difficulties/challenges may qualify for an array of concessions which address these barriers.

Focuses on comprehensively and strategically responding to gender-based violence and Femicide, with a specific focus on violence against ALL women (across age, physical location, disability, sexual orientation, sexual and gender identity, gender expression, nationality and other diversities) and how these serve to reinforce each other

The students of ETVETC emerging from diverse cultural, religious, political and economic backgrounds, conscious of the historical disparities within the African continent in general and South Africa in particular, committed to unite and build a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society, recognizing the central role played by students in serving their community, determined to instill and nurture a culture of learning, research, tolerance and understanding and critical thinking, conscious of their civil duty as the student community and members of society as a whole, make the statement that:-

The Students’ Representative Council capable of managing its own affairs forming and its component parts of the Elangeni TVET College, acting as the primary student governing body on all issues of student governance will at all times strive to:

To state an expectation of standards and behaviours for the Elangeni TVET College Student Representative Council in the discharge of its duties towards representing the broader student body.

Within such a premise the College Student Representative Council members will:

  • have a means of evaluating existing personal standards and behaviours and of identifying necessary modifications to meet the newly introduced expected standards.
  • have a means to evaluate the behaviour of others within the College Student Representative Council to ensure that high standards are being met and maintained.
  • have a means to educate the broader student population of the high behavioural standards of the Student Representative Council

ETVETC strives to ensure students’ participation in what happens within the college and its community. Better decisions are made within a college if everyone who is affected by those decisions is involved in making them in some way. And because students have been involved, it’s more likely that the actions based on the decisions will be more effectively implemented. Students are more likely to develop a strong commitment to the community and its future if they are able and permitted to take part in determining its direction. Participation in decision-making at the college level is a means through which students are able to develop responsibility and experience the democratic process.

It is the policy of Elangeni TVET College that all students are encouraged to participate in at least one summer and one winter activity of the extra-curricular activities offered at the college.  The focus is on mass participation while catering for the needs of each individual participant.  Competitions are entered into where strength opposes strength and sportsmanship and the activity itself is the winner.  Our policy therefore focuses on participation with the objective of victory a secondary outcome.

The College seeks to foster and sustain an environment conducive to learning and development, both academically, personally and socially through the establishment of codes of conduct and institutional policies. Within this context, the College recognises the need for an avenue for lodging student grievances and for appropriate procedural guidelines.
