Who is NSFAS? : The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a public entity reporting to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It provides financial assistance in the form of study bursaries to qualifying students who plan to study at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
NSFAS supports access to, and success in, higher education and training by providing bursaries to qualifying students from poor and working-class families who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of studying at a TVET college.
It is important for students to know which type of NSFAS applicant they are, as the application steps and documents required by NSFAS very accordingly.
Assistive devices: Limited to one assistive device for the duration of the qualification.
Human support: To cover for the cost of human support such as a caregiver, guide-dog, scribe, tutor, or sign language interpreter.
Specific conditions for students living with disabilities:
Students living with disabilities are eligible for the Disability funding programme if their primary Disability is regarded as an impairment which is long-term (at least 12 months), a recurring physical, mental (psychological), intellectual or sensory impairment and substantially limiting in that the impairment impacts their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others (as a result of a lack of support being provided) and all other eligibility criteria are met.
If you have a disability, you must complete Annexures A and attach proof of disability and quotation for assistive devices with the Application form.
NSFAS has removed the requirement for documents to be certified.
Once you are approved for NSFAS funding, the funding covers you until you complete your qualification; provided you continue to meet the academic progression criteria. You just need to focus on studying and passing your modules to secure your continued funding.
Students who have already obtained a prior university qualification do not qualify and should not apply for funding. Students who have completed TVET N6 qualifications cannot be funded at a TVET college again but can be funded at university.
A student can only be funded for one qualification at one institution at any one time.
Yes, if you applied for NSFAS in 2022 or at the beginning of 2023 and your application was not approved but you still need funding for 2023 Trimester 2/3 and Semester 2, you may apply again if you meet the funding criteria.
Yes, to receive NSFAS funding you will be required to apply again for the academic cycle that you wish to study in.
NSFAS approved students are not expected to pay any upfront registration fees.
